First Unitarian Church
Alton, IL 62002
This church's original structure dates back to 1836 and was built on the site of the St. Matthew's Catholic Church, which had burned down. Both churches were stops on the Underground Railroad but that church also burned down in 1905. The church that stands today is believed to be haunted, the most well known ghost being former pastor Phillip Mercer. In 1934, for unknown reasons, Mercer hanged himseld from a window transom in a hall behind the auditorium. Visitors and church officials have reported seeing him in the church.
