This hotel was built in 1928 for Edward J. Baker, a native of St. Charles who earned the honorary title of "Colonel" with his luck in horse racing. His vision was for an elegant hotel-resort -- the most luxurious small hotel featuring 55 rooms. The hotel has welcomed guest like John F. Kennedy, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, Gerald Ford, to senators and entertainers.

Many report the place to be haunted. A suicide was commited there in the 1970s. It was the hotel chambermaid who was the victim. She was left at the altar and ended up drowning herself in the nearby Fox River. Her spirit now resides at the hotel. Some report hearing moaning sounds from the 6th floor storage room area, which was the area that housed employees back then.

My husband heard a woman whisper in his ear

At the baker hotel in St Charles Illinois. We stayed on the 2nd floor. A woman whispered in my husband’s ear as we were trying to sleep. The woman said my name is Delilah or something similar to that name and she asked my husband “ Where is Edward”. My husband smelt a strange perfume smell when we walked in our room I believe it was room 207

Pretty sure my room was haunted

I stayed here after a wedding on October 13th, 2018 and I am 99% sure my room was haunted. Around 3am the bathroom lights began turning on and off by themselves intermittently over a period of about an hour and the bathroom door moved. It was wide open and slowly moved so that it was about halfway closed. I was with my boyfriend at the time and he witnessed this too. I stayed on the 4th floor and I’m not sure which room, but I know it had two beds and there was a fire escape outside our window. All the stories I’ve found have said that it’s the 6th floor that’s haunted, so I’m not sure if there’s other people who witnessed anything on that floor. But I have no doubt it was a spirit of some kind. If anyone has similar experiences please let me know! I’m very curious

This hotel is sooooooooooooo spooky

I went here with my best friend Mila, and we stayed in the 6th floor right next to our friends Ella, Avery, and Minai. We heard moaning noises near the storage room at 3:37 AM. It was sooo scary. We cried. Maybe it was just our upstairs neighbors making the moaning noises but it was sooo scary.

It's also believed that Colonial Baker's wife, Harriet Rockwell Baker, haunts the top balcony of the hotel.
