Devil's Backbone and Bake Oven

The Devil's Backbone is a rocky ridge that is about a half mile long and sits adjacent to the Devil's Bake Oven, a larger rock that is about 100 feet tall near the river's edge. Throughout history, the formations have been used as lookout points, landmarks and hiding places. In the 1700's and early 1800's, river pirates used it as a hideout and the Bake Oven was the site of an iron works and the homes of its officials. The story says the superintendent's daughter fell in love with a man that her father disapproved of. He forbidded her from seeing him and confined her to the house. She died of despair after pining away for weeks and her spirit is believed to linger at the site of the house. Witnesses have reported seeing a misty apparitions and have heard moans, wails and screams. The home was demolished and its wood was used to build a railway station, but even after this, her ghost still continued to appear.
